Why Stobi is special
Stobi traces an unusually long arc of history in one place — Paeonian settlement, Macedonian town, Roman provincial capital, and early-Christian bishopric — capped by a 5th-century peacock mosaic famous enough to appear on North Macedonia's currency. It's a rewarding, uncrowded alternative to the region's better-known Roman sites.
The practicalities of the day
Stobi sits about 90 minutes from Skopje near Gradsko. There's no simple do-it-yourself route, so a guided day trip is the standard approach — many pair it with tastings in the nearby Tikveš wine region.
